Haggai (hăg`āī), prophetic book of the Bible. Dated 520 B.C., it is a collection of five oracles addressed to Jews, newly returned from the Babylonian exile. The prophet summons the people to renew work on the restoration of the Temple as the necessary prerequisite for the imminent dawning of the messianic age—the time when the splendor of the Solomonic empire will be reestablished under the earthly rule of a Davidic monarch. The book is addressed to the leader Zerubbabel Zerubbabel (zērŭb`əbəl) [Heb.,=seed of Babylon], in the Bible, a grandson of King Jehoiachin (exiled in 597 B.C. ..... Click the link for more information. , a Davidic prince, and the high priest Joshua, saying that the new Temple will be less in material splendor than Solomon's, but its glory will be greater. The book concludes with a Messianic prophecy about Zerubbabel's divine purpose, the imminent overthrow of the nations, and the dawning of the rule (i.e., the Kingdom) of God. Haggai(flourished 6th century BC) One of the 12 Minor Prophets of the Hebrew scriptures, traditional author of the book of Haggai. (His prophecy is part of a larger book, The Twelve, in the Jewish canon.) Born during the Babylonian Exile, he returned to Israel when it ended and helped mobilize the Jewish community to rebuild the Temple of Jerusalem. His book consists of four prophecies delivered in 521 BC. He attributes the economic distress of the returned exiles to their delay in reconstructing the Temple and promises that the new house of God will be greater than the first.
