Haise, Fred Wallace, Jr
Born Nov. 14, 1933, in Biloxi, Miss. American pilot and astronaut. Haise graduated from the University of Colorado in 1959 with a bachelor of science degree in aerospace science. He was a research pilot at the Flight Research Center in Edwards, Calif.; at the Manned Spacecraft Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) in Houston, Texas; and at the Lewis Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. Haise has written several articles on aviation and space exploration. He graduated from the Aerospace Research Pilot School in 1964 and joined NASA’s team of astronauts in 1966. Haise was pilot of the lunar module Aquarius on the Apollo 13 flight to the moon (Apr. 11–17, 1970); his fellow astronauts were J. Lovell, Jr., and J. L. Swigert, Jr. The flight lasted 142 hr 55 min.
