Hale, Eugene (1836–1918) U.S. representative/senator; born in Turner, Maine. A conservative, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives (Rep., Maine; 1869–79) and the U.S. Senate (1881–1911). He was a reliable supporter of business interests and although he helped to modernize the U.S. Navy, he opposed the spirit of imperialism that followed the Spanish-American War.
