Hale, Philip, 1854–1934, American music critic, b. Norwich, Vt. He was music critic of the Boston Post (1890–91), Boston Journal (1891–1903), and Boston Herald (1903–34) and annotated the program notes of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1901 until his death. A collection of his writings was published in 1935. Hale, Philip (1854–1934) music critic; born in Boston, Mass. Writing for the Boston Herald (1903–33) and as a Boston Symphony Orchestra program annotator, he was a Boston legend with his conservative tastes in music and the arts.
