Hale, William Jay

Hale, William Jay (1876–1955) chemical engineer; born in Ada, Ohio. During World War I, Hale conducted research on mustard gas for the U.S. government. In 1919 he became director of organic chemical research at Dow Chemical. He made contributions to the production of phenol, indigo, chloracetic acid, and phenyl alcohol.
