Haleakala National Park

Haleakala National Park (hä'lāä'kälä`), 29,824 acres (12,074 hectares), on Maui island, Hawaii. Haleakala volcano, 10,023 ft (3,055 m) high, has been dormant since the mid-1700s. Its crater, 2,720 ft (829 m) deep with an area of 19 sq mi (49 sq km), is one of the largest in the world. Rare silversword plants and many native and migratory birds are found in the park. Originally part of Hawaii National Park (est. 1916), it gained separate park status in 1960. See National Parks and Monuments (table).

Haleakala National Park

National park, eastern Maui, Hawaii, U.S. Established in 1960, it occupies an area of 28,655 acres (11,597 hectares). Its central feature is Haleakala Crater, the world's largest dormant volcanic crater, more than 2,500 ft (762 m) deep and about 20 mi (32 km) in circumference. The crater floor, covering more than 19 sq mi (49 sq km), has areas of forest, desert, and meadow. It is the site of Science City, a research-observatory complex operated by the U.S. Department of Defense and the Universities of Hawaii and Michigan.

Established: Authorized as part of Hawaii National Park on August 1, 1916; redesignated on September 13, 1960. Wilderness designated on October 20, 1976. Designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1980.
Location: Park extends from the 10,023 foot summit of Haleakala down the southeast flank of the mountain to the Kipahulu coast near Hana on the Island of Maui, Hawaii. These two sections of the Park are not directly connected by road, but both can be reached from Kahului. The Summit area of Haleakala is a three-hour round trip drive from Kahului via roads 37, 377, and 378. The Kipahulu area of the park is at the east end of Maui between Hana and Kaupo.
Facilities: Campgrounds, picnic area, rest rooms (é), cabin rental, visitor centers (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities: Camping, hiking, horseback riding, swimming, stargazing, wildlife viewing, auto touring, ranger-led programs.
Special Features: The park preserves the outstanding features of the upper slopes of the Haleakala Crater on the island of Maui and protects the unique and fragile ecosystems of Kipahulu Valley, the scenic pools along Oheo Gulch, and many rare and endangered species.
