Haley, Jay (1923– ) psychologist, family therapist; born in Midwest, Wyo. He was educated at the University of California: Berkeley and Stanford; at the latter he was a research associate at the Project for Study of Communications. As a director of family experimentation at the Mental Research Institute in Palo Alto, Calif., he did influential work in family therapy and published (with Lynn Hoffman) Techniques of Family Therapy (1967). He was the director of family research at the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic (1967–74) and in 1974 became the director of the Family Therapy Institute in Chevy Chase, Md.
