On the central northern border of NC, north of Rocky Mount; organized 1758 (prior to statehood) from Edgecombe County. Name Origin: For George Montagu (1716-71), second Earl of Halifax, president of the English Board of Trade, called the "Father of the Colonies" for his strong support of trade with them.

    On the central southern border of VA, southeast of Lynchburg; organized Feb 27, 1752 from Lunenburg County. Added the former independent city of South Boston effective June 30, 1995. Name Origin: For George Montagu Dunk (1716-71), 2nd Earl of Halifax, English statesman and a strong supporter of trade with the American colonies.
