Born Nov. 22, 1930, in Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk. English producer and theatrical figure.

In 1954, Hall joined the Arts Theatre in London, where he staged Ionesco’ The Lesson, Beckett’s Waiting for Godot, and Anouilh’s The Waltz of the Toreadors. In 1957 he organized the International Playwrights Theatre, which offered T. Williams’ fantasy drama Camino Real. He staged Shakespeare’s Cymbeline (1957), Coriolanus (1959), Twelfth Night (1960), and Macbeth (1967) at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre (since 1961, the Royal Shakespeare Theatre) at Stratford-on-Avon, and from 1960 to 1968 he was the director of the theater. In the 1960’s and 1970’s, Hall produced operas at Covent Garden. Since 1973 he has been head of the National Theatre of Great Britain, where in 1974 he staged Ibsen’s John Gabriel Borkman.
