Halleck, Charles (Abraham) (1900–86) U.S. representative; born in Demotte, Ind. An infantryman during World War I and an Indiana University graduate, he became prosecuting attorney in Rensselaer, Ind. (1924–34). A Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives (1935–69), he served as majority leader for six years and minority leader for four years, appearing in weekly television press conferences with Senator Everett Dirksen in the 1960s.
