Hallidie, Andrew (Smith) (1836–1900) engineer, inventor; born in London, England. An inventor's son, he emigrated to California with his father in 1852 and became a mining engineer. He later designed and built many bridges in California. In 1871 he perfected the invention for which he is remembered, the cable railroad. He introduced San Francisco's famous cable cars in 1873. |
