Hallwachs, Wilhelm 

Born July 9, 1859, in Darmstadt; died June 20, 1922, in Dresden. German physicist; graduated from the University of Strassburg in 1883 and became professor of the Higher Technical School in Dresden in 1893. He conducted research on the photoelectric effect and showed for the first time that metals lose their negative charges under the action of ultraviolet radiation.
