Halq al-Wadi
(formerly La Goulette), a city in northern Tunisia, in the province, or governorate, of Tunis, on the Gulf of Tunis of the Mediterranean Sea. Population, 46,500 (1971). Halq al-Wadi is the outport of Tunis, with which it is connected by a 10-km canal that passes through the Lake of Tunis (Tunis Buhay-rat); it handled 2.5 million tons of cargo in 1975. Principal exports handled by the harbor are iron ore and phosphorites. A center of commercial fishing, Halq al-Wadi has a shipyard and a steam power plant. Want to thank TFD for its existence?
