Hamamatsu (hämä`mäts), city (1990 pop. 534,620), Shizuoka prefecture, S central Honshu, Japan. An important transportation hub, its chief products are motorcycles, musical instruments, textiles, and tea. Hamamatsu was a castle town in the 16th cent.

Hamamatsu 

a city and fishing port in Japan, in southern Honshu, in Shizuoka Prefecture. Population, 460,500 (1972). Machine building, including the production of motorcycles, plays an important role in the city’s economy. Hamamatsu also manufactures chemical products, cotton fabrics, wood products, and musical instruments.
