In northeastern TN, northeast of Knoxville; organized Jun 8, 1870 from Grainger, Hawkins, and Jefferson counties. Name Origin: For Hezekiah Hamblen (1775-1854?), member of the Hawkins County court.

Pop 2005: 59,898. State rank: 21. Pop change: 2000-20005 3.00%; 1990-2000 15.20%. Pop 2000: 58,128 (White 88.50%; Black or African American 4.10%; Hispanic or Latino 5.70%; Asian 0.60%; Other 4.60%). Foreign born: 5.30%. Median age: 37.10.
