Hammarskjöld, Dag Hjalmar 

Born July 29, 1905, in Jönköping; died Sept. 18, 1961, in Ndola, Zambia. Swedish statesman and economist; member of the Swedish Academy (from 1954). Son of K. H. L. Hammarskjöld.

Hammarskjöld graduated from the University of Uppsala in 1925 and obtained further degrees in 1928. From 1936 to 1945, he served as undersecretary of the ministry of finance and from 1941 to 1948 was chairman of the board of the National Bank of Sweden. From 1949 to 1951, Hammarskjöld was undersecretary of the foreign ministry and from 1951 to 1953 was deputy foreign minister. In 1948–49 he served as vice-chairman of the Organization for European Economic Cooperation. He became secretary-general of the United Nations in April 1953. Hammarskjöld died in an airplane accident.
