Hamming, Richard W. (Wesley) (1915– ) computer scientist; born in Chicago, Ill. Head of the Computing Science Research Department, Bell Laboratories (1946), he specialized in problem-solving on large-scale computers and computer design. Editor of several journals, he wrote Numerical Methods for Scientists and Engineers (1962) and is founder of the Association for Computing Machinery.
