Harald Cramér

Cramér, Harald 

Born Sept. 25, 1893, in Stockholm. Swedish mathematician.

Cramér became a professor of mathematics and mathematical statistics at the University of Stockholm in 1929. From 1950 to 1958 he was rector of the University of Stockholm, and from 1958 to 1961 chancellor of the Swedish universities. Cramer is best known for fundamental studies in probability theory, mathematical statistics, and the mathematical theory of insurance. He discovered the remarkable property of the normal distribution law, which states that if the sum of two independent random variables is normal, each addend has a normal law of distribution.
