In south-central FL, south of Winter Haven; organized Apr 23, 1921 from DeSoto County. Name Origin: For Cary Augustus Hardee (1876-1957), governor of FL (1921-25).

Area (sq mi): 638.33 (land 637.30; water 1.03). Pop per sq mi: 44.40.
Pop 2005: 28,286. State rank: 49. Pop change: 2000-20005 5.00%; 1990-2000 38.20%. Pop 2000: 26,938 (White 54.60%; Black or African American 8.30%; Hispanic or Latino 35.70%; Asian 0.30%; Other 20.80%). Foreign born: 17.50%. Median age: 32.70.
Income 2000: per capita $12,445; median household $30,183; Pop below poverty level: 24.60%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $16,616-$17,257.
