In central IA, east of Fort Dodge; established Jan 15, 1851 from Black Hawk County. Name Origin: For Gen. John J. Hardin (1810-47), officer in the Black Hawk War and U.S. representative from IL (1843-45). He was killed at the Battle of Buena Vista in the Mexican-American War.
