On northern border of MD, northeast of Baltimore; organized 1773 (prior to statehood) from Baltimore County. Name Origin: For Henry Hartford (c. 1759-1834), an illegitimate son of Frederick Calvert (1731-71), 6th Lord Baltimore, and the last proprietor of the colony of MD.

Area (sq mi): 526.72 (land 440.35; water 86.37). Pop per sq mi: 543.30.
Pop 2005: 239,259. State rank: 7. Pop change: 2000-20005 9.50%; 1990-2000 20.00%. Pop 2000: 218,590 (White 85.80%; Black or African American 9.30%; Hispanic or Latino 1.90%; Asian 1.50%; Other 2.50%). Foreign born: 3.40%. Median age: 36.20.
Income 2000: per capita $24,232; median household $57,234; Pop below poverty level: 4.90%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $31,318-$34,553.
Unemployment 2004: 3.90%. Change from 2000: 0.00%. Median travel time to work: 31.60 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 48.10%.
