Harlech (här`lĕkh, –lĕk, här`lē), town (1981 pop. 1,372), Gwynedd, W Wales. It is a resort area with beautiful beaches. The ancient capital of Merionethshire, with its 13th-century castle, rests on a cliff 200 ft (61 m) above the modern seaside town. The heroic defense of the castle against the Yorkists (1468; see Roses, Wars of the Roses, Wars of the, traditional name given to the intermittent struggle (1455–85) for the throne of England between the noble houses of York (whose badge was a white rose) and Lancaster (later associated with the red rose).

The Welsh fortress was the last to surrender (1647) to the parliamentarians in the English civil war English civil war, 1642–48, the conflict between King Charles I of England and a large body of his subjects, generally called the "parliamentarians," that culminated in the defeat and execution of the king and the establishment of a republican commonwealth.
