Harris, Chauncy

Harris, Chauncy (Dennison) (1914–  ) geographer; born in Logan, Utah. He took a doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1940, remaining there to teach; he also served as dean of social sciences (1955–60) and director of the Center for International Studies (1966–84). Appointed Samuel N. Harper Distinguished Service Professor (1973), he became vice-president for academics (1975–78), retiring in 1984. With J. Fellman he compiled the International List of Geographical Serials (1960, 1971, 1980), and he wrote Cities of the Soviet Union (1970). He was active in national and international geographical organizations, holding several offices with the International Geographic Union.
