Harrisonburg

Harrisonburg, city (1990 pop. 30,707), seat of Rockingham co., NW Va., in the Shenandoah Valley; settled 1739, inc. 1916. It is a processing center in a poultry, dairy, and livestock area. Manufactures include computers, clothing, paper and metal products, machinery, building materials, transportation equipment, chemicals, furniture, animal feeds, and fertilizers. Gen. T. J. (Stonewall) Jackson ended his renowned Valley Campaign just E of Harrisonburg in 1862, and his leading cavalry general, Turner Ashby, was killed there. James Madison Univ., Eastern Mennonite Univ., and the headquarters of George Washington National Forest are in the city. Limestone caverns and the Shenandoah National Park are nearby.

In northern VA, 23 mi. northeast of Staunton. Founded in 1780; incorporated as a town in 1849; as a city in 1916. Serves as county seat for Rockingham County. Name Origin: For Thomas Harrison, who gave fifty acres for the town site.

Pop 2005: 40,438. State rank: 40. Pop change: 2000-20005 -0.10%; 1990-2000 31.80%. Pop 2000: 40,468 (White 80.10%; Black or African American 5.90%; Hispanic or Latino 8.80%; Asian 3.10%; Other 6.10%). Foreign born: 9.20%. Median age: 22.60.
Income 2000: per capita $14,898; median household $29,949; Pop below poverty level: 30.10%. *Personal per capita income 2000-2003: $22,054-$24,240.
Unemployment 2004: 3.30%. Change from 2000: 1.30%. Median travel time to work: 14.80 minutes. Working outside county of residence: 29.90%.
