Harrodsburg

Harrodsburg, city (1990 pop. 7,335), seat of Mercer co., central Ky., S of Frankfort. It is a trade center in a bluegrass area producing livestock, grain, and tobacco. Dairy products, paper goods, optical lenses, and textiles are also made. Harrodsburg is a tourist and resort city, with mineral springs. The oldest settlement W of the Alleghenies, it was founded in 1774 by James Harrod Harrod, James, 1742–93, American frontiersman, b. Bedford co., Pa. He fought in the French and Indian Wars and in 1773 made a journey down the Ohio River to Kentucky.
