Harrogate

an administrative district in Great Britain, in North Yorkshire. Formed between 1973 and 1975, it includes the cities of Ripon and Harrogate and various rural populated points. Its population in 1974 was 134,300. Industry is represented primarily by food processing and the manufacture of textiles.

The city of Harrogate has been a balneological and climatic health resort since the 16th century. Situated in the foothills of the Pennine Mountains, it is approximately 130 m above sea level. The resort has almost 90 mineral springs including chalybeate and sulfate springs. The waters of 16 of the springs are used for drinking. The sulfate Montpellier Spring is the site of the Royal Baths. The Royal Bath Hospital provides thermal and electrical treatment.

From Harrogate, tourists make excursions to the historic sites of Yorkshire, especially to the town of Knaresborough and to the abbeys of Fountains and Bolton.
