Hart, Philip A.

Hart, Philip A. (Aloysius) (1912–76) U.S. senator; born in Bryn Mawr, Pa. He was admitted to the Michigan bar in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army and was wounded on D-Day (1944). He was the district attorney for Michigan and then lieutenant governor of that state (1955–59). As a U.S. senator (Dem., Mich.; 1959–76) he was considered by his colleagues the "conscience of the Senate." He advocated civil rights, antipollution, and antitrust legislation. He sponsored the Truth in Packaging Act (1965) and the Truth in Lending Act (1966).
