Hartley, Fred, Jr.

    0.24 sec.
Hartley, Fred (Allen), Jr. (1903–69) U.S. representative; born in Harrison, N.J. After serving in local offices, he became the youngest member of the U.S. House of Representatives (Rep., N.J.; 1929–49). After the Republican victory in 1946, he became chairman of the Labor Committee, drafting the antilabor Taft-Hartley Act of 1947, which outlawed closed shops and required an anticommunist oath from labor officials. His write-in campaign for the Senate in 1954 failed and he retired to cattle farming.
