Hartline, H. Keffer

Hartline, H. (Haldan) Keffer (1903–83) physiologist; born in Bloomsburg, Pa. He was a National Research fellow at Johns Hopkins (1927–29), then became a biophysicist at the University of Pennsylvania (1931–48), taking the year 1940–41 to teach at Cornell. He returned to Johns Hopkins (1949–53), then joined Rockefeller University (1953–74). He won the 1967 Nobel Prize in physiology (shared with colleague Ranger Granit and George Wald) for his 40 years of research on vision, particularly for his investigations of the electrical activity of the optic nerve at the cellular level.
