Hartung, Hans (häns här`tng), 1904–89, French painter, b. Germany. Hartung rejected the early influence of German expressionism expressionism, term used to describe works of art and literature in which the representation of reality is distorted to communicate an inner vision. The expressionist transforms nature rather than imitates it.

 and developed an entirely abstract style in which a strong linear element creates a rhythmic unity. In his works black lines are grouped together in bunches on a luminescent background. Characteristic is his Composition (1951; Cavellini Coll., Brescia).
