Harvey, William Hope, 1851–1936, American writer on economics, called Coin Harvey, b. Buffalo, Putnam co., W.Va. He studied at Marshall College, practiced law, and interested himself in monetary problems. He was a vigorous advocate of bimetallism bimetallism , in economic history, monetary system in which two commodities, usually gold and silver, were used as a standard and coined without limit at a ratio fixed by legislation that also designated both of them as legally acceptable for all payments.

His Coin's Financial School (1894) attempted to explain the money question in simple terms. Harvey's sturdy pamphleteering had great influence on the Populist party, and his demand for free coinage of silver was given full expression when William Jennings Bryan ran for President in 1896. Bryan's famous "cross of gold" speech in 1896 embodied Harvey's ideas. Among Harvey's other works are Coin on Money, Trusts, and Imperialism (1899) and The Remedy (1915).
