Harz (härts), mountain range, northern Germany, extending c.60 mi (100 km) between the Elbe and Leine rivers. The rugged mountains were once densely forested. They culminate in Brocken peak (3,747 ft/1,142 m high). The region has good waterpower potential, and intensive uranium-ore prospecting began there after World War II. The Upper Harz has extensive wastelands and a severe, rainy climate. It is noted for its mineral deposits (especially silver). Gosler, Germany, is the chief town of the region, which also has some summer resorts. The Lower Harz has a mild climate. It is an agricultural region where grains and cattle are raised. Wernigerode, Germany, is the main town. How to thank TFD for its existence? Tell a friend about us, add a link to this page, add the site to iGoogle, or visit webmaster's page for free fun content. |

Other major silver camps that they included in this family are: Kokanee Range (Slocan), British Columbia; Coeur d'Alene, Idaho; Freiberg and the Harz Mountains, Germany; and Pribram, Czech Republic. In 1877, Bollinger and Harz (3) named the genus Actinomyces when they described the etiologic agent of bovine actinomycesis ("lumpy jaw") and called it Actinomyces bovis. Among more than a dozen specific charges, Harz complains the NJSEA acted far outside of its powers in pursuing the project; the selection ignored vital public concerns of traffic and regional business; the NJSEA has not allowed sufficient public scrutiny of the project; Xanadu does not conform to the spirit or the letter of the NJSEA's own development criteria. |
