Hassi Messaoud

Hassi Messaoud (häs`sē mĕs'säd`) [Arab.,=blessed well], town, E Algeria. Formerly a watering hole in the Sahara desert, Hassi Messaoud rose to prominence with the discovery of oil in 1956. In 1979, oil refining expanded greatly. A refinery is located in the town, and pipelines carry oil to Skikda, Algiers, Bejaïa, and Arzew. By the early 1980s half of Algeria's total oil production came from the field.
Hassi Messaoud 

a settlement in Algeria, in Djelfa Wilaya. Population, approximately 10,000 (1968). Hassi Messaoud is the center of a major oil field that was discovered in 1956 in the Algerian Sahara. In 1975 the field produced 27 million tons of petroleum and accounted for more than 60 percent of Algeria’s total output. Petroleum is carried by pipeline to the ports of Bejaia and Arzew on the Mediterranean Sea. Some petroleum is refined at Hassi Messaoud.

Summary: Energy and Mining Minister Chakib Khelil, on Friday in Hassi Messaoud (80km from Ouargla), put in operation the project of gas compression and re-injection in the deposits of El Agrab, El Gassi and Zotti, located at 103km southeast of Hassi Messaoud.
The drilling activities will be carried out on block 405B, located in the Berkine basin about 350 kilometers south east of Hassi Messaoud, for a period of three years starting from mid-2009.
The existing town of Hassi Messaoud, which means "blessed well" in Arabic, is in east-central Algeria and adjacent to a major oil field of the same name.
