Hatay (hätī`), formerly sanjak of Alexandretta, province (1990 pop. 1,002,252), 2,141 sq mi (5,545 sq km), S Turkey, including the cities of Antioch (now Antakya) and Alexandretta (now Iskenderun). Iron is mined and Hatay is a transportation link with Syria and other parts of Turkey. The population is predominantly Arab but includes many Christians. Relations between the two countries have been strained over several issues, including the contested Hatay province southeast of Turkey, water rights to the Euphrates River, and Syria's past refusal to expel Turkish Kurd rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan (since expelled and sentenced to death in Turkey). We also received some cases from the Hatay (Iskenderun and neighboring villages) region, which is known to have mineral deposits; however, detailed studies from this region do not exist in the literature. |
