Haugen, Einar Ingvald (1906–94) linguist; born in Sioux City, Iowa. As professor of Scandinavian languages at the University of Wisconsin (1931–75) and as emeritus professor at Harvard University (1975), he wrote extensively on the teaching of Scandinavian languages, particularly Norwegian, and on bilingualism and language contact. Among his works are a Norwegian-English Dictionary (1965), Language Conflict and Language Planning (1966), and The Scandinavian Languages (1976).
