a department of E France, in Rhône-Alpes region. Capital: Annecy. Pop.: 663 810 (2003 est.). Area: 4958 sq. km (1934 sq. miles)

Haute-Savoie 

a department in southeastern France, in the Savoy Alps; situated along Lake Geneva, on the Swiss-Italian border. Area, 4,400 sq km. Population, 427,000 (1974). The prefecture is Annecy.

In Haute-Savoie 15 percent of the work force is employed in agriculture and 31 percent in industry (1968); many work in the service industry. Electrical energy is provided for electrochemistry and electrometallurgy by hydroelectric power plants on the Arve and other rivers. Machine tools, clocks, and leather goods are produced. Cattle is raised and cheese is made. Haute-Savoie is a tourist center, especially for winter sports; resorts include Chamonix and Evianles-Bains.
