Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

National preserve, southeastern shore of Hawaii island, U.S. Established in 1916, it occupies an area of 358 sq mi (927 sq km) and includes the active volcanoes Mauna Loa and Kilauea, 25 mi (40 km) apart. Other highlights are Kau Desert, an area of lava formations near Kilauea, and a tree-fern forest that receives nearly 100 in. (2,500 mm) of annual rainfall.

Size: 323,431 acres.
Established: Established as part of Hawaii National Park on August 1, 1916; redesignated Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on September 22, 1961. Wilderness designated on November 10, 1978. Designated a Biosphere Reserve in 1980 and a World Heritage Site in 1987.
Location: 96 miles from Kailua-Kona driving southeast on Hwy. 11, or 125 miles through Waimea and Hilo via Hwys. 19 and 11. The park is 30 miles from Hilo.
Facilities: Campgrounds (é), picnic area, rest rooms (é), lodging, restaurant/snacks, visitor center (é), museum/exhibit, self-guided tour/trail. Entrance fee required.
Activities: Camping, hiking, mountain climbing, auto touring, stargazing, ranger-led programs.
Special Features: Active volcanism continues here, on the island of Hawaii, where at lower elevations luxuriant and often rare vegetation provides food and shelter for a variety of animals. An 11-mile drive circles Kilauea's summit caldera and craters, passes through rainforest and desert, and provides access to scenic stops.
