Established: 1909.
Location: A chain of nine islands, reefs, and atolls extending about 1,200 miles northwest from main Hawaiian Islands.
Special Features: The refuge supports almost the entire population of the endangered Hawaiian monk seal and provides nesting beaches for virtually the entire Hawaiian population of threatened green sea turtles. Additionally, several thousand species of inshore tropical fish, algae, coral, and other marine organisms inhabit the marine habitat of the refuge.
Habitats: 1,766 acres of emergent rocky islands, sandy islets, and rugged volcanic-remnant islands, and more than 600,000 of submerged lands.
Access: Closed to public use. Special-use permits can be obtained for scientific research.
Wild life: Endangered Laysan duck, Laysan finch, Nihoa finch, and Nihoa millerbird, albatrosses, green and hawksbill sea turtles, O'ahu tree snail.
