Name Origin: For Benjamin Hawkins (1754-1816), French interpreter for George Washington (1732-99), member of the Continental Congress (1781-84; 1786-87), U.S. senator from NC (1789-95), and Indian agent for all tribes south of the Ohio River. Area (sq mi): 499.63 (land 486.66; water 12.97). Pop per sq mi: 115.50. Pop 2005: 56,196. State rank: 23. Pop change: 2000-20005 4.90%; 1990-2000 20.20%. Pop 2000: 53,563 (White 96.70%; Black or African American 1.50%; Hispanic or Latino 0.80%; Asian 0.20%; Other 1.00%). Foreign born: 0.70%. Median age: 37.80.
