On the northeastern border of TN, west of Kingsport; organized Nov 18, 1786 (prior to statehood) from Sullivan County. Name Origin: For Benjamin Hawkins (1754-1816), French interpreter for George Washington (1732-99), member of the Continental Congress (1781-84; 1786-87), U.S. senator from NC (1789-95), and Indian agent for all tribes south of the Ohio River
