hay baler, farm machine that packs and ties (or wraps in plastic) field-dried hay into bundles, called bales, for convenient handling, storage, and shipping. It ordinarily picks up hay that has been raked into rows (see rake rake, farm implement consisting of a row of straight or curved teeth of metal or wood attached to a bar or frame. Very large bales are often stored in the field and moved with front-end loaders. Nearly all hay in the United States is baled. BibliographySee C. Culpin, Farm Machinery (12th ed. 1992). A fellow journalist asked what I thought of New Holland's new logo with a yellow swoop and the yellow hay baler with a blue stripe. Thirteen hundred tons of switchgrass was harvested with a hay baler, chopped into short pieces, and burned with coal in a 725-megawatt boiler. In coming fairs, he hopes to expand to include demonstrations, such as hitching a mule to the hay baler and showing how it works. |
