Hayden, Tom (1939– ) radical activist, state legislator, author; born in Royal Oak, Mich. One of the best-known student radical leaders of the 1960s, he was a cofounder of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) (1961), president of SDS (1962–63), cofounder of the Economic Research and Action Project (1964), and leader of the Newark Community Union Project (1964–67). Married to actress Jane Fonda, he ran for U.S. Senate in California (1976), was founder of the Indochina Peace Campaign, founder and chairman of the California Campaign for Economic Democracy (1977), and chairman of the California SolarCal Council (1978–82).
