Hays, (John Coffee) “Jack” (1817–83) soldier, public official; born in Little Cedar Lick, Tenn. As a captain in the Texas Rangers, he reputedly introduced Samuel Colt's revolving pistol—the six-shooter—to the frontier. He moved to California (1849) and served as the sheriff of San Francisco.
