Also found in: Hutchinson 0.02 sec.
Hays, (William Harrison) Will (1879–1954) movie executive; born in Sullivan, Ind. A lawyer (1922), former chairman of the Republican National Committee, and Postmaster General under President Harding, he was appointed head of the new Motion Picture Producers and Distributors of America, Inc. (MPPDA), created by the movie industry itself to counter increasing public protests against Hollywood scandals and risqué films. In 1930 the MPPDA set forth its Production Code (soon known as the Hays Code)—detailed listing of what was or was not allowed in movies—and in administering the Code (until 1945), Hays exercised great influence over American movies.
Hays, Will
