HD Ready

Refers to a TV set that can display a minimum of 720 lines of resolution and can scale up lower and scale down higher-resolution signals. It requires a set-top box to tune in the HD programs. See HDTV and HD Built In.

While critics say that broadcasters have been slow in developing programming for the digital spectrum they got for free from the federal government in the late 1990s, local media experts note that it's only recently that a critical mass of viewers with HD-ready TVs and other high-tech media toys have emerged to justify the investment.
The digital video age is already upon us, but when some of us techno-phobes hear about digital TV and high definition TV and HD-ready TV, we cover our ears and run from the room.
Customers who have an HD-ready television set will be able to rent a digital set-top converter and HD tuner, which allows them to view channels broadcast in high-definition, for $5 per month.
