Heade, Martin (Johnson) (1819–1904) painter; born in Lumberville, Pa. The son of wealthy farmers, he studied with Edward Hicks (c. 1838), moved to New York City (1866–81), traveled widely, and finally settled in St. Augustine, Florida (1885–1904). His dramatic seascape, Approaching Storm: Beach near Newport (c. 1860) is considered his masterpiece, but his later botanical paintings are also highly acclaimed.
