headset

[′hed‚set]
(engineering acoustics)
A single headphone or a pair of headphones, with a clamping strap or wires holding them in position.

headset

A combination of speakers and a microphone worn by pilot over his head for communicating on the radio or over the intercom and, in the case of combat aircraft, to receive a missile lock on an RWR (radar-warning receiver) and other such signals.

headset

A head-worn unit containing a microphone and one or two speakers. Employed in call centers and phone-intensive jobs, headsets allow people to easily have a phone conversation while using the computer. Wired headsets plug into the phone and may have a quick release that lets users walk away without taking the unit off their head. See earphones, headphones and mini-phone connector.

Wireless Headsets
Bluetooth headsets transmit a short distance between the phone and earpiece. However, wireless office headsets let people answer calls some distance from their desks. The telephone line plugs into a base station that transmits to the headset. See Bluetooth headset, handset and virtual headphones.

Virtual Reality Headsets
Headsets for virtual reality (VR) completely envelop both eyes and immerse the user in a 3D environment. See virtual reality.

The Office Headset
The headset combines a microphone and speaker in one head-worn unit. Workers can talk and work comfortably on the computer at the same time.
