Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument

Location: On Highway 1, halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Facilities: Historic structures/museums, visitor center, exhibits, gift shops, food service, picnic area, restrooms (é).
Activities: Guided tours.
Special Features: The famous "Castle" was designed by noted architect Julia Morgan and built by William Rudolph Hearst between 1919 and 1947. It includes a 115-room main house, guest houses, theater, tennis courts, pools, and 127 acres of gardens, terraces, and walkways. It remains as Hearst left it, furnished with fabulous antiquities and artwork. More than a million visitors a year tour Hearst CastleĀ®.
