heat wave 1. a continuous spell of abnormally hot weather 2. an extensive slow-moving air mass at a relatively high temperature heat wave [′hēt ‚wāv] (electromagnetism) Infrared radiation, much higher in frequency than radio waves. (meteorology) A period of abnormally and uncomfortably hot and usually humid weather; the condition must prevail at least 1 day to be a heat wave, but conventionally the term is reserved for periods of several days to several weeks.
