Heerlen (hār`lən), city (1994 pop. 95,794), Limburg prov., SE Netherlands. It is an industrial and transportation center. Manufactures include textiles and food products. The city was a major coal-mining center from the late 19th cent. to the early 1970s, when mining operations were closed.

Heerlen 

a city in the southern Netherlands, in Limburg Province. Population, 72,300 (1975). A railroad junction, Heerlen is the industrial center of the Limburg Coalfield, from which hard coal is extracted. The city manufactures coke by-products, electrical equipment, glass, pottery, clothing, and tobacco products.

After the discovery of natural gas in the north of the country in the late 1950s and with the advent of cheaper coal production facilities in other countries, the city of Heerlen was among several towns that saw its mines close and its communities shrink as thousands of jobs were lost.
It now operates under the name Polfrost Logistics Services BV, from the same location in Heerlen.
